Fidyah/Kaffarah Ramadan Project

What is Fidya

For people with a valid reason not to fast–such as, pregnancy, nursing, illness or travel, it is encouraged that you make your fasts up after the month of Ramadan. If you’re unable to make up the fasting days that you’ve missed, then you can pay Fidya. Note: Fidya is primarily for those who are suffering from long term illness or unable to fast due to old age, and are not able to make up the fasts after Ramadan.

What is Kaffarah?

If you skip a day of fasting on purpose, without a valid excuse, then you are required to fast 60 consecutive days. If you can’t fast for 60 days straight, then you can pay Kaffarah, which feeds 60 hungry people. You must do this for every day that you missed.

$5 – Fidya if you missed 1 day of fasting with a valid reason

$25 – Fidya if you missed 5 day of fasting with a valid reason

$150 – Fidya if you missed 30 day of fasting with a valid reason

$300 – Kaffarah to compensate for 1 deliberately broken fast

How much is fidya for Ramadan 2025?

$5 fidya for each missed fast. This should provide 1 person with 2 meals or 2 people with 1 meal. However, if someone misses all the fasts of Ramadan, they would need to pay $150.

Who is eligible for fidya?

You are eligible to pay fidya if you have missed or are exempt from fasting due to illness, old age or any other reason which prevents you from making the fasts up later.

Who can receive fidya?

Fidya is to be given only to the poor and needy, not to everyone. Scholars consider fidyah to be like zakat, therefore those entitled to receive fidya are regarded as being among those who are entitled to zakat.
